REDDITCH United held out for their first away league win for over a year to move four points clear of the relegation places in the Evostik Southern Premier.

Graham Hyde’s men put in a hardworking display that deserved the three points in a game of limited quality at the Wessex Stadium, with a moment of class from Connor Deards paving the way to victory for United.

Former Red Sam Malsom had struck the post for Weymouth before Deards opened the scoring on 28 minutes – collecting a half cleared cross on the edge of the box, Deards controlled on the turn before blasting back across goal on the half volley, finding the top corner of Tom Manley’s goal.

Weymouth probed for a way back into the match but created little, Jamie Beasley missing a header at the far post from Ollie Tribe’s cross before the Reds grabbed a decisive second right on half time. James Travis’ clever throughball found the run of James Deabill who took a touch before coolly sliding his finish inside the far post.

United were happy to shut up shop in the second half, but grabbed what proved to be a vital third goal on the hour when Sam Poole’s clearance hit his own team mate – Joe Halsall reacted quickest, adjusting well to execute an overhead kick from eight yards.

The home side offered little before they were handed a consolation goal four minutes from time – Halsall pushing Warren Byerley in the area with the Weymouth frontman dusting himself off to score the resultant penalty.

The nerves were jangling when Craig Duff netted from Byerley’s knockdown at the death, but it was too late to affect the result, with referee Pete Lavelle blowing the full time whistle almost immediately after the restart.

REDS: Coleman 6, Stringfellow 5, Robinson 6, WARMER 8*, Hickman 7, Grimes 7, Deards 8, Halsall 7, Deabill 6, Travis 6, Jones 6 (Moses-Garvey 84).

Subs: Oulton, Carter, O’Callaghan, Bedford (g/k).

ATT: 493.

REF: Mr Peter Lavelle (Totton), 8.
